A single dental implant can cost $3500-$6500 depending on case complexity and the materials used. Higher grade materials will result in a more expensive procedure.
Are dental implants covered by insurance?
Currently there are no public insurance plans like the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) that offer coverage for dental implants.
If you have a private dental insurance, your coverage will depend on the specific plan. The coverage will only be partial (Ex. 50%) or may have an annual/lifetime maximum (ex. $1500-$2500) for “Major Restorative” work.
Am I a candidate for dental implants?
A dentist will need to evaluate you to give a definitive answer but here a few factors that determine candidacy:
1) Healthy Gums: You need healthy gum tissue without active periodontal (gum) disease. Active infection can prevent the implant from integrating properly with the bone
2) Sufficient Bone: Your jawbone must be deep and wide enough to support the implant. If you have bone loss, you may need a bone graft or sinus lift first to rebuild the foundation. A 3-D scan (CBCT) will be necessary to evaluate bone sufficiency.
3) Overall Health: You need to be healthy enough to undergo a minor surgical procedure and heal properly. Certain conditions (like uncontrolled diabetes, bleeding disorders, or immune deficiencies) can affect healing, though many can be managed

Dental Implant Timeline:
1. Consultation and Planning
Timeframe: 1–2 weeks
Your dentist will perform a thorough exam, take 3D scans, and create a personalized treatment plan. This is also when they will determine if you need any preparatory work.
2. Implant Placement Surgery
Timeframe: 1–2 hours (procedure)
The titanium post is surgically placed into your jawbone under local anesthesia. Initial recovery (swelling and soreness) usually lasts about 3–7 days.
3. Osseo integration (Healing and Bone Fusion)
Timeframe: 3 months
This is the longest and most critical phase. The implant fuses with your jawbone to create a stable foundation. Implants in the lower jaw often heal faster than those in the upper jaw because the bone is denser.
4. Abutment Placement and Final Crown
Timeframe: 2 weeks
Once healing is confirmed, a small connector (abutment) is attached, and your gums are given a couple of weeks to heal around it. Finally, the custom-made crown is placed and adjusted for a perfect fit.
Dental implants are designed to be a long-term solution, and for many patients, the titanium post can last a lifetime. The best evidence suggests that with good care, more than 90% of implants are still functioning after 10 years, and the majority can last 20 years or more.
Dental implant surgery itself typically does not cause pain, as local anesthesia is used to completely numb the surgical area. Postoperative discomfort is generally mild to moderate, and studies consistently show that it is usually less painful than tooth extraction.
